Mieke Vanmechelen

Mieke is a visual artist and filmmaker whose practice integrates drawing, painting, and moving image as interconnected methods of storytelling. Her drawings and paintings emerge from a deep engagement with how people hold space and assert their presence within it. Movement is central to her work, with each mark capturing a sense of rhythm, agency, and transition. Whether on paper, canvas, or film, her practice captures fleeting moments with a sensitivity to gesture and atmosphere, illuminating both the seen and unseen layers of contemporary life.

Originally from Antwerp, Vanmechelen has lived in Ireland since 1981 and is based on a hill farm on the Kerry side of the Beara Peninsula. She studied at Trinity College Dublin (1992–96) and completed an MA at Crawford College of Art and Design in 2014.

Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at Solas Nua in Washington, D.C., the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, the Glucksman Gallery Cork, and Highlanes Gallery in Drogheda.
